Sandia beats La Cueva, Twice

I had forgotten about the rain out game and thought the season was over. I didn't really want to go to the game today because I didn't think Luc would be playing and they were playing La Cueva (yuck yuck they suck). Any way, last night Lucas said they were gonna let him bat in the games and that I had to go to the game because the seniors were gonna be announced and the parents have to go out on the field. It turned out to be one of the best games of the season. Our guys played some solid defense and actually did some hitting today and they won both games. Winning the first one was good enough but they pulled in out in the second game in the seventh inning to break the tie and win. They have a small chance of going to the state tournament with these wins but it would be fine to end it this way.

Lucas had a hit first bat, walked and struck out once. I don't remember all his at bats but he had a good game and it was a great way to for him to end high school baseball. I've enjoyed watching him play all these years starting with Little League, then summer ball and now high school. I hope he keeps playing as long as he wants but after he gives his arm a break.

The season is over for all the teams and here are the final stats. Luc has some damage to his elbow and didn't play the last few games. He is scheduled for an MRI and physical therapy later this month. Hopefully he will make a full recovery.

Jacob is gettng ready for football by lifting weights and keeping his grades up. Just a few weeks left of school, hang in there guys.

Update: Luc will see the doctor on Tuesday and the teams play their last regular scheduled games this weekend in Santa Fe (roadtrip). It is always great getting to play and watch and it will be sad to see the season end but we did our best and that is all that anyone can ask for.

It rained again today and guess who was waiting for me when I got home? My friend Mr. Roadrunner. This time Jacob helped me chase him around.

I have a class tomorrow so I'll miss the first baseball game. Luc is on the injured list so he isn't playing. Jacob will be at the game and I hope he gets some playing time but who knows. It will be a rough day for the team tomorrow, wish them luck, they will need it. I'm leaving to Med after the game to visit Dad for his 85th birthday on the 18th so I will miss my game on Sunday. I have not bought a gift for him and have no idea what to get him. I really need to plan better.

I Gave Up

I was unsuccessful at getting the video to load and I'm giving up now because life must go on.

The Varsity won both their games yesterday against Albuquerque High 10-0. I missed the first game but Alena said they had to stop for a while because it was snowing. Yup, snow for Easter weekend, although today was much nicer, so Jacob and his Dad decided to do some spring yard work and being pyromaniacs that means "torching the dead grass"! I can't say too much because last weekend I did the same thing to the grass around my rose bush. It is there on the left and if you look closely you can see dead leaves and that I almost killed it. I'm not allowed to play with matches anymore.

NM Game Day

Lucas and Jacob just left to go be on TV. The Sandia Baseball team will be on KOBTV Channel 4 NM Gameday at 10:30 pm tonight. Stay tuned for the video. GO MATADORS!

I can't get the video to load but while I'm still working at getting it to load I will post a picture. Lucas was chosen to give the intro and he biffed a little and his hair looked very wild but I was proud just the same. Jacob sat way in the back and was cut out of a couple of shots but he had fun and that is all that mattered.

The sports season is almost half way through and spring is in the Air. Varsity and JV are both holding their own and fighting hard. Next week is Spring Break so no games this weekend. A Win

The Varsity team finally has a win under their belt after beating Provo, Utah 2-0 today in the first game of the tournament. Yeah Matadors! It is a good day for the team but I hope they don't celebrate too much because they have two more games to play. Tomorrow they play Moriarty (another New Mexico team) but I wish they could have played a Colorado or Utah team because it is alway nice to see what other talent is out there. Luc sounded happy when I called to find out the score and I missed Jacob's call but when I called back he was very happy too (even though he didn't get any playing time). Jacob said Lucas pitched the last innings and did his job by holding them with no runs, so all is good with my boys tonight.

I drive out tomorrow morning to watch the second game and now that they won I don't have to leave as early as I thought I would. It is about a three hour drive and not the most scenic but it is someplace I have never driven on my own so it will be an adventure and I hope to see lots of new things and have a good time. Alena, one of the other baseball moms, has family and a fiance there and she said I can stay with her and her man so I didn't even make a hotel reservation. I am living wild and free and ready to face the north west corner of New Mexico all on my own. Farmington, here I come.

Happy Birthday Grandma! I love and miss you and did a little weaving the other day in remembrance of you.

This week Varsity is on the road traveling to Farmington, NM. First game they play is against a team from my home state of Utah. I will miss this game (and JV's game today) because of school but plan on going to the games on Friday and Saturday. Win or lose they will play three games with teams from NM, CO and UT.

Baseball In Full Swing

High School baseball season officially started today at 3:30 with our first game against Eldorado HS. I went to watch the Varsity team play because Lucas said he was pitching. I got there during the first inning and we were down 1-0, my son's friend Charlie was leaving as I arrived and said they had hit a homerun off Luc. He pitched for a couple of innings and they battled back and had the lead for a while but then the other team started hitting and we lost 23-13 with the 10 run rule going into effect after the 6th inning. Thank God! It was so freeking cold and windy and even though I had on two jackets and a blanket wrapped around me I froze my ass off. I don't know how the boys can play in such weather but they do so they are way tougher than me. I am a wimp when it comes to the cold. Give me 100 degrees anytime, especially now because I still haven't warmed up. Burrrrrrr

Bears vs Colts

The avocados are ripe and ready to be made into some guacamole for Superbowl XLI. We have some Bears fans in the house and you have me who is cheering for the Colts. I am not a bear fan but I do like one of their players because he is a homey from NM. Brian Urlacher played high school football in Lovington, NM then came here to Albuquerque to play as a Lobo at UNM. He was drafted by the Bears but kept his ties to NM by running football camps for the local youth. My son Jacob was lucky enough to attend a Urlacher football camp and we were able to get a picture of Urlacher, Jake (a good friend of Jacob) and Jacob. The look on Jacobs face while Urlacher is talking to him is priceless and the experience was something very special for Jacob, he loves playing football. So today we will all enjoy the game and Jacob and Larry will cheer for the Bears and I will cheer for the Colts but secretly will be cheering for the Brian too.

I totally failed at jinxing the Colts and Bears, which means the teams I picked are going to the Superbowl!!!

I pick the Baltimore (Indianapolis) Colts to to beat 'The Bears" on Superbowl Sunday. I refer to this game as, "The battle between Psychomom and Psychodad". Let the craziness begin!!!

Jinx Test

This is a test of the power of the "Psychomom Jinx". When I was visiting Rita we watched her favorite football team, the Denver Broncos play and because Rita loves them I was cheering for them. They lost, oops sorry Rita. Then someone from work asked me who I wanted to go to the Superbowl. I'm really not a football fan so I said, "my brother Rick likes San Diego, so I'll pick the Padres", (I meant the Chargers, which goes to show what a football fan I am). Anyway, San Diego lost and are out, sorry Rick. The other day I was talking to a friend at work who loves Chicago and I told her I would not cheer for them or they would lose. This morning as I ate my pancakes and read the newspaper I decided to pick teams to test my Jinx Power and make a prediction on who I want to go to the Superbowl and see what happens.

Years ago when I met my son's father I learned he also loves 'The Bears'. We were grocery shopping one day and they had some NFL beer mug with nuts inside for sale. He picked the Bears and made me pick out another team. I don't really have a team so I picked the Baltimore Colts because I remembered watching Johnny Unitas back in the day with my Dad and brothers. They are not in Baltimore anymore but I still call them that. In honor of the day I picked out a team mug and because yesterday morning I had to take Lar (the dad) to the emergency room because he was in major pain as he passed a kidney stone, I choose the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis (Baltimore) Colts to win in today's games.

I really don't want to Jinx them but I need to test the powers every so often.

The boys are on the road to Las Cruces this morning. Game time is at 1:00 pm so it was an early start for Jacob. He had everything pack last night like coach instructed. There have been more articles about the football team in the newspaper and they interviewed coach on the local news last night. It will be a tough fight today and they are going to have to take the win from Mayfield. Lets do it guys, take charge early and come home with the win. You can do it!

JV ended the season 4-4 with a win 38-6 over Albuquerque HS. Varsity gave them a beating last night 41-0 which gives them a 7-1 record. Very impressive! My soccer (aka football) team didn't play today because too many player were going to be out so we rescheduled.

It was a very nice day for soccer. We lost 5(or 6) to 1 and I scored our only goal (yeah old woman!). Veronica wasn't there but I took the photo anyway. I can always take another. Last night Luc, Leandra and I went to my company picnic at the zoo. We saw a few animals and ate before it was too dark to see anything and then we left. It would have been nice if it had started a few hours earlier.

I didn't drive out to Los Lunas to watch the game yesterday and it was a good thing. It seems they were a little upset about the loss our varsity team gave them for homecoming so the must have brought down the varsity to beat up our JV. Final score 42-6, OUCH! Jacob was not a happy camper when they got home last night and would not tell me the score. When I finally dragged it out of him this morning he got all pissed at me like I did the beating. Kids.

I came home and posted some pictures for Crazy Aunt Purl (a favorite blog) who wanted to see where us bloggers knit. I knitted the 8x8 sqare in the Arts and Crafts photos for her grandmother. Now I need to mail it.

We won our soccer game yesterday 2-1 and the weather was perfect. Veronica was a no show and didn't answer her phone when I called so she better have a good excuse why she missed the game. I did okay but my left foot is still hurting from the first game and then my right foot got stepped on yesterday so now they both hurt. We played a new team full of spanish speaking girls. I say girls because they were young. Luckily they were inexperienced too otherwise they could have out ran us. Sorry no team picture yet. Veronica has to be in it.

Homecoming 2006

Homecoming was Thursday night and the Matadors WON 14-7! They held their own the first half and came out to win in the second. Jacob did his long snapping with no problems. The stands were full and the cheerleaders and band entertained. At half time the cheerleaders had a some sort of cheer-off. They all partnered up and one lifted the other up to a one leg stand and whoever held it the longest won. The Matador girls won that too. Tonight is the dance. Luc and Leandra are going and Jake doesn't want to go.

We play or soccer game in town tomorrow which is good because it has been cold the last few days. I hate playing out in Bernalillo when it is cold, for some reason it always seems colder and windier out there. Wish us luck!

Junior Varsity played West Mesa last night and gave them a beating. Best part was when Jacob, playing Linebacker, forced a fumble then picked it up in the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN! He was so excited and proud to have his first TD under his belt. He has played center for so long it is nice that he is able to play another position and score. Tomorrow is the homecoming game and it should be a good one against Los Lunas. They lost their homecoming last week so they may want to spoil ours. GO MATADORS!

Veronica and I drove out to Bernalillo to play our soccer game yesterday afternoon. I was a beautiful day, a little chill in the air gave it a fall feeling. Most of our team was there ready to play but the other team only had 5 players so they had to forfeit and we got our second win. It is nice to win but not as fun as when you earn it. My left ankle was really hurting after the last game and started to hurt again Saturday so it was probably better that I didn't play on it. I also didn't take the team picture because the team manager wasn't there and I thought she should be in the picture since she does manage it.

Friday night the football team seniors were on the local news because this week is Homecoming at school. JV plays tomorrow, Varsity plays Thursday, and the dance is Saturday. Luc is a Senior this year so he is going but Jacob hasn't decided. I hope he goes seeing how he is the one on the football team. Hope they win all their games. Good Luck Matadors! We played our first game yesterday out at the Benalillo complex. We have new uniforms and a few new players so it was a nice to start with a win. The weather was warm with beautiful clear skies. A little hot but not too bad. I took my camera so I could get a team picture but totally forgot. I must remember next week so we can show off our fancy uniforms.

Consolation win

Luc and Marty (and the other players) are staying with host families while in NJ. He sounded a little home sick when he called last night. He said he played second base and that they won the game against Pennsylvania yesterday and that they play them again today because the other two teams in the consolation bracket went home early. Brian Ward-Hersee, one of our Pirates, took third in the homerun derby. Good job dudes. The day before, they went to New York with their Dads and saw the sights like the Empire State building, Rockafeller Center, Central Park. I hope they took lots of pictures, I so want to see NY. They will see a Yankee vs. Angels game tomorrow and come home Monday. School started Thursday and Jake had 2-a-day football practices this week, including today, so he had to be there at 5:30am. It was nice getting to and leaving work early this week, no traffic and out by 2:30pm. They end the week with a survivor picnic today and we need to bring a side dish. After the picnic I will go to Deb and Mike's reception to celebrate their marriage. Deb has been my soccer manager for several years until this year. She isn't going to play anymore so Mike won't be around either. Mike's daughter, Tammy is taking over the team so we still have a team and we start the season after Labor Day weekend. It sounds like a fun day. I'm off.

Bummer, another loss. I hope they are at least having some fun. They play two consolation games, one tomorrow against Pennsylvania and last game Saturday. It was nice that they were able to get four games, win or lose. Good luck guys, play hard, have fun.

Luc seems to be feeling better since we returned home, guess it was home sickness. Early this morning he left with his dad to New Jersey where his summer baseball team will play in the Don Mattingly Under 17 World Series. Pirates Set Sights on Under-17 World Series

    It's the best team I've ever been on. This is the best team I've ever been on.
    This is the best team I've ever played on.
    The members of the Albuquerque Pirates sound so much alike when being interviewed, you'd think their hometown was Stepford.
    First outfielder Trevor Purvis (speaker No. 1), then infielder/pitcher Brian Ward-Hersee (speaker No. 2), then catcher Jeff Lucero (speaker No. 3). In perfect harmony as it relates to their baseball team. And none privy to what the others had said.
    Probably, that's what a summer of extreme content can do for the collective psyche of a young team.
    The 43-4 Pirates have mowed their way through the Southwest, and have set their sights on the Don Mattingly Under-17 World Series in Flemington, N.J., starting Tuesday. The Pirates are one of eight teams competing for the coveted title.
    It's a roster top-heavy with talent from the North Valley, West Side and Rio Rancho.
    Valley High has five players on the team: Lucero, Marty Gonzales, Dom Gallegos, Gabe Flores and Gavin Lujan.
    West Mesa has its own Jeff Lucero, and St. Pius is contributing Ward-Hersee and Stephen Leddy. Kyle Hammond and Purvis are the Rio Rancho High representatives.
    Even after a summer in which they rolled to four tournament titles, nothing is likely to have prepared them for the quality and depth of talent they'll see in New Jersey.
    "We're gonna run into some competition, I guarantee you," Pirate manager Jim Lucero said. "It's supposed to be a really heavily-scouted tournament."
    The Pirates won a preseason Connie Mack tournament to get the year going. Then they took first in Mack events in Roswell and Las Cruces and then captured the state/regional event in Albuquerque at Rio Grande.
    Their ticket to Jersey was punched with a win at the state/regional event.
    "We'll face a lot of good teams, a lot of good pitching," said Valley's Jeff Lucero. "But we have a chance as long as everyone is on."
    The Pirates were formed six years ago; Valley's Lucero, son of the manager, and Leddy were on that first team, with others coming onboard in recent years. Some are in their second stint with the program.
    Valley's Lucero might be the only player on the team not entirely focused on this tournament. Were he available, the Farmington Rattlers, who are competing in the premier Connie Mack World Series in Farmington starting tonight, could have added him to their roster.
    "I am kind of bummed," he said. "I know this is my real team, but it would have been real special to be in the World Series."
    His former battery mate at Valley, pitcher Sam Spangler, is starting today for the Rattlers.
    Sandia has four players on the Pirates in Lucas Dean, Matt Flores, Andrew King and Michael Scarlett. There also are players from Highland (Robert Matson), Los Lunas (Ricardo Taddy) and Eldorado (Heath Warren).
    Everyone on the team will be seniors except Valley's Flores who is entering his junior year.
    "I think we can compete with anybody out there," said Rio Rancho's Purvis. "We have depth in our pitching staff and any one of our pitchers can shut down any team at any time."
    Ward-Hersee admitted that part of the appeal of going to the East Coast is getting to shine on an individual basis.
    Many of the Pirates are expected to sign with a college, if not a Major League team, when their prep careers end in the spring.
    "Of course, you want to help the team, but you're also down there to get yourself noticed as well, and just give yourself the best chance you have to go on to bigger and better things," Ward-Hersee said.
    The team still needs to raise about $5,000 to cover expenses. The cost of the trip is about $15,000; two-thirds of that has been raised, Jim Lucero said.
