Here is the Albuquerque Journal article:

Mayfield Stops Sandia, Reaches 5A Final

By Sam Aselstine
Journal Sports Editor
LAS CRUCES— One couldn't have scripted any more drama than already existed in Saturday's Class 5A state football semifinal at the Field of Dreams and expected anyone to believe it.
The Mayfield defense was in its end zone, digging in and trying to protect a 21-14 lead and forge a date in next weekend's state final while a determined Sandia offense set up for a first-and-goal at Trojans' 2-yard line.
Everyone in the stadium on this crisp, sunny Saturday afternoon knew who was going to get the ball, the Matadors' bull of an athlete, Derris Jackson, standing under center as the final, hand-held seconds ticked down.
First down: Jackson, no gain.
Second down: Jackson, a yard.
Third down: Jackson, no gain.
Fourth down: Jackson strained, reached, wriggled, then disappeared in a sea of 20 players.
Where'd he go? Where's the ball?
When the bodies were pulled off the pile, the officials ruled Jackson had fumbled and Mayfield had recovered with just a few seconds remaining (the scoreboard was inoperable the entire game).
Mayfield's Nathan Enriquez took the final snap, leaned over right guard for a yard and the Trojans had earned a berth in Saturday's final at Alamogordo against the District rival Tigers.
"The defense got low and stopped 'em three times," said Trojan coach Michael Bradley. "It's tough to stop anyone three times, but to stop No. 34 (Jackson) ... "
Said Sandia coach Kevin Barker: "We were in on second down and third down. They (the officials) just didn't wanna make the call. Then over here, Michael (Scarlett's) knee was down (on an earlier fumble inside the Trojans' 5 that Mayfield recovered)."
Barker, however, was quick to credit Mayfield's effort, particularly the Herculean defensive stand that sends the Trojans to their fifth title game in the past six years in search of their third title in that span.
"I'm not blaming the referees by any means. We made some mistakes," Barker added of a trio of turnovers inside the red zone.
"Kudos to Michael's defense. Not too many people have been able to stop Derris for no gain. For them to do it twice, that just shows the heart of a champion."
The teams traded touchdowns in the first half, Mayfield scoring first on a 3-yard run by Carlos Olivas in the first quarter. Sandia answered on its next possession when Jackson hooked up with Scarlett on a 15-yard pass. The Trojans took a 14-7 lead in the second quarter when Yanni Suter broke a couple of tackles to run it in from five yards out. Sandia answered again on its next possession when Terrance Woodfin caught a 20-yard TD pass from Jackson.
Mayfield's Enriquez threw what proved to be the knockout punch before the Trojans relied on their defense to preserve the win. The 6-foot, 175-pound junior busted loose on a 50-yard run in the third quarter to set the final score.
"We were there, toe-to-toe; they'd throw and punch and we'd throw a punch," said UNM signee Scarlett, virtually unstoppable while hauling in seven passes for 131 yards and a touchdown. "I had a feeling we were going to win because we'd done it before. It was just like boxing, but they threw the last punch."
Mayfield was led offensively by Olivas, who finished with 72 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries. Trojan quarterback Matthew Sandoval hurt his ankle in the first quarter and didn't return until the second half, obviously hobbling and far from full strength. He finished with just 13 yards rushing on seven carries but clearly his toughness served as inspiration for his teammates.
"That Sandoval kid, how tough is he?" Barker said of the 5-foot-6, 160-pound junior.
Sandia outgained Mayfield 351-289 in total yards. Jackson finished 15 of 21 for 229 yards and two touchdowns, and ran another 17 times for 131 yards.
Top-seeded Mayfield (12-0) stretched its winning streak to 26 games with the victory and will meet the third-seeded Tigers at 1 p.m. Saturday in Alamogordo. The Trojans beat the Tigers 16-6 on Oct. 20 in Alamogordo during the regular season.
MAYFIELD 21, SANDIA 14
1st Downs: S 15; M 10. Rushing: S 28-122; M 29-222. Passing: S 15-21-1--229; M 6-10-0--67. Total Off.: S 351; M 289. Fumbles-Lost: S 3-3; M 1-1. Punts-Avg.: S 2-24.5; M 3-38.6. Rec.: M 12-0; S 11-2.
